THE GROUNDS OF ALEXANDRIA
At number 2 Hunter Street, Alexandria, just outside of Newtown is The Grounds of Alexandria. The Grounds is built in to an old heritage warehouse and boasts a cafe, a bakery, markets, a bar, a garden of fresh herbs and vegetables, their own coffee, coffee classes and their prized pig ‘Kevin Bacon’. They make and serve their own coffee on site and operate like a well oiled machine with one area of the cafe dedicated solely to take away orders. The menu is full of home-style dishes with a modern twist including feta and kale croquettes and quinoa cakes with soft poached eggs coated in dukkha. The bakery is on site and it is impressive to observe the bakers churning out the freshly baked goods. The Grounds also make their own preserves. This was my absolute best place to eat in Sydney!
HEALTHY MADE EASY WITH MERO MERO
In the middle of a bustling food court surrounded by typically easy and unhealthy lunch options for your mid-shop refuel is Mero Mero. I was so impressed by the beautiful layout of salad ingredients adorning the cabinet that I had to give this one a try. I haven’t seen a take away like this one before, Mero Mero provides set menu options of salads and soups but you can also design your own! A standard vegetarian salad design lets you chose 7 ingredients from a list of about 40 plus a delicious dressing to top it off. This costs $9 AUD and to add meat it cost an extra $3 AUD. I went with a rocket based salad containing roast pumpkin, goats cheese, pine nuts, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, lentils, avocado, wagyu beef tenderloin and a chipotle dressing! I love this idea as you can get creative and someone else does the hard work! The ingredients are fresh and almost limitless and the portion size is very generous.They even throw in some of their signature sourdough bread. Check it out when you are in Westfield Sydney CBD.
