Embracing change through travel and culinary discovery

Speyer

Speyer is a small and welcoming town located next to the river Rhine and is known as one of Germany’s oldest cities. The construction of the Speyer cathedral began in the year 1030! As my family in Germany lives very close to Speyer I have been here a few times and I always enjoy wandering the local streets or along the Rhine. This time we did a tour inside the Cathedral and we were able to get up to the top to see a beautiful view of the town. The audio tour was actually pretty interesting, did you know that to remove the large fresco paintings from the cathedral walls and preserve them they used the delicious and nutritious dairy product called Quark?

After visiting the cathedral we had a traditional German lunch in the beer garden at the Domhof brewery where they brew their own beer according to traditional German principles. The beer was great and the food was very authentically German and delicious also. We sampled saumagen and traditional wurst with sauerkraut. Delicious!
